The Molecular Pharmacology Group of the School of Life Sciences has major interests in membrane proteins (G Protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), VEGF tyrosine kinase receptors and ATP-binding cassette drug transporters), intracellular signalling and trafficking. The group is funded by MRC, BBSRC, Wellcome Trust, Heptares Therapeutics, AstraZeneca and GSK. A major feature of current work is the development of drug discovery projects in collaboration with medicinal chemists in the School of Pharmacy. An example of this is a major programme funded by the Wellcome Trust Seeding Drug Discovery initiative that has developed a highly selective beta-1 adrenoceptor antagonist for the treatment of patients with concomitant cardiovascular and respiratory disease. The group has developed novel fluorescent approaches to the study of GPCRs at the single cell and membrane microdomain level and has an extensive state-of-the-art imaging facility.
